RoHS / Analytical Testing

Bureau Veritas Electrical and Electronic Product Services RoHS Testing expertsRoHS Testing has increased in importance due to a number of issues. Increased environmental concern in Europe has driven efforts to promote Green Manufacturing. Green Manufacturing principles aim to reduce the negative environmental impact of product and services by lowering energy consumption, minimizing toxicity, extending product service life, and setting reuse, recycling, and recovery targets. RoHS Testing is also applicable for many other national/state laws such as California RoHS, China RoHS, Korea RoHs, etc...

With Green Manufacturing principles in mind, the European community recently enacted legislation in the form of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restrictions on the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directives. These Directives restrict the use of certain hazardous chemicals and require waste management of electrical and electronic equipment throughout the product life cycle.

To assist importers, manufacturers and retailers, we offer a complete package of RoHS Testing services designed to ensure compliance with the WEEE and RoHS Directives.

Finished Product RoHS Testing Verification

The Finished Product RoHS Testing Verification service is a very fast, flexible and cost effective solution for finished products. The product is disassembled and categorised into high and low risk materials. High risk materials undergo RoHS Testing individually, whilst low risk materials are ground into a composite mix and RoHS Testing is performed. A verification report is issued with a pass/fail for each material / group of materials.

This service is NOT a comprehensive RoHS evaluation of your product to the component level. We do offer analytical services of this nature but they are not a cost effective method of RoHS compliance. RoHS compliance is most effectively implemented by the whole supply chain with component suppliers doing the heavy lifting to make compliant components. This service is intended as a due diligence check of completed assemblies as part of a comprehensive RoHS compliance management program which in general includes supplier’s declarations of component compliance. Our service is intended to spot non-conformities for follow up action and is intended to bolster confidence that existing compliance programs are effective. If your company is in doubt about implementation of a RoHS compliance program we recommend a one day seminar and gap analysis to help you develop a comprehensive RoHS management system.

Finished Product RoHS Screening Verification

The RoHS Testing XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) screening service provides spot analysis of materials and components in your product. In testing your product, we will select, sample, grind, and analyze components and materials from the product you supply. If there are any particular items you wish us to focus on (to a maximum of 20) just let us know. We can work either with separate component samples (e.g., an IC, a piece of plastic or bracket material, a fastener) or in many cases, remove them from your product. You may wish to supply separate samples, particularly where you are considering an alternate part. For results to be of maximal value in supporting your products RoHS documentation, we need to accurately identify what we have tested. At the board level, we need identifying information which characterizes the product and the revision level. If you have called out any particular components for analysis, whether mounted in your product or separately supplied, we will also need identification of them. Generally, only one sample will be required.

Full RoHS Testing

This is the most effective, but cost-prohibitive, way to check RoHS compliance of a product whereby we measure the concentration limit of all the hazardous substances per homogeneous material of a product or component. For complex products (more than 200 homogeneous materials), we recommend starting with a technical documentation analysis.

Detection of Specific Substances

If you aware of high risk parts of your product or component, we also measure the concentration limit of specific hazardous substances in those specific parts.

Bureau Veritas also offers full analytical testing of individual components to investigate RoHS compliance. Evaluation is recommended as part of a continuing surveillance of established vendors and to qualify new vendors. Grey market and substitute parts of questionable origin are prime candidates for RoHS testing. We offer full wet chemistry testing of components to determine RoHS compliance or the presence of other substances upon request.
