Green Energy >> A Background

Demand for green energy has grown substantially in the past few years, driven mainly by rising conventional energy costs, increased realisation of environmental protection and political support. Green Energy effectively utilizes natural resources such as:

  • Sunlight (Solar Power)
  • Wind (Wind Power)
  • Water (Hydroelectricity)
  • Hydrogen and Oxygen (Fuel Cells)
  • Geothermal heat, and,
  • Biofuels

In 2006, the International Energy Association (http://www.iea.org) estimated that about 13 percent of primary energy comes from renewables with modern technologies like geothermal, wind, solar, and marine energy together producing less than 1% of total world energy demand.

However, the technical potential for their use is very large, exceeding all other readily available sources. And with targets such as the EU leaders reaching agreement in principle in March 2007 that 20 percent of the bloc's energy should be produced from renewable fuels by 2020, as part of its drive to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, blamed in part for global warming, these technologies are only set to grow and grow.

The Green Energy market is growing for many forms of renewable energy. Globally, wind power generation more than quadrupled between 2000 and 2006; the global photovoltaic (PV) revenue is likely to almost triple from 2006 to 2009 and the global PV market has been growing at more than 40% for the past couple of years and is expected to continue.

  • Wind power has a worldwide installed capacity of 74,223 MW and is widely used in several European countries and the USA.
  • The manufacturing output of the photovoltaics industry reached more than 2,000 MW per year in 2006, and
  • World solar photovoltaic (PV) market installations reached a record high of 1,744 megawatts (MW) in 2006, representing growth of 19% over the previous year.
