Bureau Veritas–ADT appointed as M-Taiwan official WiMAX Testing Laboratory

Taipei, Taiwan - 8th Sep 2006 - Already a respected global leader in wireless compliance testing and certification, Bureau Veritas-ADT has further strengthened its leading position by becoming the official WiMAX research and development partner laboratory for the Mobile Taiwan Program. The M-Taiwan Program as it is known, also linked to as the WiMAX Acceleration Plan, is being implemented in line with the Taiwan WiMAX Development Roadmap. According to the roadmap, the Taiwanese government provides money to fund R&D relating to WiMAX-related chip development, key systems and application platforms, standards and test case development, etc…

After a series of strict examinations, including the investigation of qualification techniques as well as facility capability and capacity, Bureau Veritas-ADT was approved and announced as the official laboratory of M-Taiwan Program in June 2006. One of the main reasons for the appointment is to strengthen the capabilities in the field of WiMAX testing in Taiwan.

Bureau Veritas-ADT has been a member of WiMAX Forum since 2004 and was the first Taiwanese laboratory involved in research and development focussing on the technical issues such as standards of certification and working frequencies and developing the testing capability in the field of WiMAX. Bureau Veritas-ADT is also a member of the Taiwan Broadband Wireless Communications Alliance Testing and Certification SIG. Through this route, Bureau Veritas-ADT plays an important knowledge translation role in sharing information with members of the Testing and Certification SIG, holding seminars and attending worldwide activities.

Bureau Veritas–ADT: WiMAX Testing Roadmap:

  • 2005: Bureau Veritas-ADT performs mandatory regulatory testing on WiMAX products including RF, EMC, SAFETY and SAR as well as obtaining the required certification for target countries such as the US, Canada and European Union, etc…
  • 2006: Accepted as a qualified M-Taiwan laboratory. Bureau Veritas-ADT is also building its M-Taiwan WiMAX testing laboratory for interoperability testing as well as to perform tests based on the requests of M-Taiwan Program.
  • Ongoing: Bureau Veritas–ADT to seek approval as a WiMAX Forum Designated Certification Lab (WFDCL)

About WIMAX *1

WiMAX is an acronym that stands for "worldwide interoperability for microwave access." It names a broadband wireless access system, including hardware and software, in conformance with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 standards. The aim of the WiMAX-standard formulators is nothing short of creating a seamless wireless communications environment throughout the world. WiMAX is also aimed at making broadband network access widely available without the expense of cable-access broadband or the distance limitations of Digital Subscriber Line.

WiMAX networks are superior to WLAN--wireless local-area networks--in that while the latter is a short-distance technology with a maximum transmission distance of 100 meters, WiMAX-compatible base station equipment and devices such as personal computers, personal data assistants and cell phones can transmit and receive signals over distances up to 50 kilometers.

The WiMAX system's much higher volume of data throughput--made possible by a combination of higher-frequency microwave transmission, new signal-multiplexing hardware and software, new types of micro processors and more efficient Internet-transmission software--will make possible the rapid transmission of videos, phone calls and other types of digital information without distortion and without the traffic jams that trouble WLAN systems when too many people are using the same hotspot.

About M-Taiwan *1

The WiMAX Acceleration Plan is being implemented in line with the Taiwan WiMAX Development Roadmap approved in September 2005 by the National Information and Communications Initiative Committee under the Executive Yuan. According to the roadmap, the government would provide nearly US$34.4 million by the end of 2006 to fund R&D relating to WiMAX-related chip development, key systems and application platforms. The infrastructure built under the earlier-established Mobile Taiwan--or M-Taiwan--project would be used to promote WiMAX applications.

The M-Taiwan program was announced by the government in October 2003 as part of a five-year economic development plan. The general goal of the program is to expand wireless regional networks around Taiwan and spur the development of popular applications for broadband Internet users.

A key ingredient in the WiMAX Acceleration Plan is collaboration between the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and U.S.-based Intel Communications Group--one of the WiMAX Forum's most enthusiastic advocates of the new wireless communications concept. On Oct. 17, 2005, they inked an agreement aimed at transforming Taiwan into a base for developing WiMAX technology.

Under the terms of the agreement, the MOEA will promote the development of WiMAX equipment and service industries in Taiwan, coordinate distribution of domestic airwave frequencies and provide resources as well as assistance for WiMAX field trials. For its part, in addition to supplying Taiwan with WiMAX technology compliant with the IEEE 802.16 standard, Intel Communications will share with Taiwan its extensive WiMAX field testing experience, assist Taiwan's manufacturers develop advanced WiMAX equipment and solutions, and ensure that their products are compatible with telecommunications networks around the world.
