Curtis-Straus adds RTTE/R&TTE Directive Notified Body Appointment

19 January 2007 - Liitleton, MA, USA - Curtis-Straus, a Bureau Veritas Electrical company, is pleased to announce it has added to its impressive portfolio of appointments and accreditations with the addition of Notified Body status (Identification Number 1797) under Directive 99/5/EC, the EU Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE / R&TTE) Directive. This appointment coupled with its existing Telecommunications Certification Body (TCB) and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) appointments in USA and its Certification Body accreditation by the Standards Council of Canada, means suppliers of radio and telecommunications equipment can now achieve cost effective approval for Canada, USA and the European Union from one single source.

The scope of the RTTE / R&TTE Directive appointment covers all radio and telecommunications equipment using two compliance routes:

  • Annex III (Internal production control + specific apparatus tests) – Applies to radio equipment only. In the absence of stipulated radio tests within harmonized standards, Curtis-Straus can issue a radio test schedule detailing the required tests to be performed. An Annex IV TCF Opinion must then be sought from a Notified Body.
  • Annex IV (Technical construction file - TCF) – Applies to radio and telecommunications terminal equipment. There is no mandatory set of requirements for a TCF, however, to ensure a quick turnaround, Curtis-Straus recommends a suppliers’ TCF should contain an index or content list, description of the apparatus, procedures to ensure compliance (including a description of checks to ensure latest standards are used and ongoing compliance in manufacture is maintained), test data (reports, test methods, justifications, etc…) and user Instructions. On receipt of a TCF, Curtis-Straus will review and issue an opinion on whether it meets the appropriate essential requirements.

The essential requirements that must be met for radio and telecommunications equipment cover Health and Safety (including Specific Absoprion Rate where approproriate); EMC; Protection of the Radio Spectrum and equipment class specific requirements.

Whichever compliance route is used and whatever the outcome, a CE mark using the Curtis-Straus Identification Body number is then placed on the product. In the case of Class 2 radio equipment (equipment using frequency bands not harmonised throughout the EU and hence could cause interference in some Member States) the ”Alert” symbol must also be included.

These appointments coupled with their comprehensive international approvals service and European and Asian network of laboratories and offices means Bureau Veritas now provides an extremely attractive market access solution to discerning clients seeking superior turn around, lower cost and high quality services to access more markets.
