Bureau Veritas sponsors 71st General Meeting of the IEC

October 28, 2007 – Paris, France - Bureau Veritas sponsored the 71st IEC meeting held in Paris in October 2007. 1000 delegates from all over the world met in Paris, for the 71st General Meeting of the IEC, from 21st to 26th October. The week was marked by numerous highlights: technical committee meetings, SMB, CAB, ExCo, APSG, President's forum, Secretaries' forum, and Council Board. After a very serious week, the General Meeting ended by a dinner show in Lido, where UTE also celebrated its Centenary.

Oliver Butler presented to hundreds at the opening of the week long event onboard the Paquebot. Topics of the speech included:

• Bureau Veritas’ LCIE links with the IEC and UTE ever since their formation in 1906 and 1907 respectively. Highlights included the fact that LCIE bought UTE's certification activity in 1996 and is still a UTE board member
• The success of the IEC being down to strong and determined leadership from the IEC and the commitment of industry who attends such events
• The fact that in today’s highly competitive market, the Electrical and Electronics industry has managed to uniquely work together to further the role standardization plays in facilitating international trade.
• The ongoing success of the IEC schemes and the vast acceptance of IEC Standards as a basis for international trade by countries worldwide; demonstrated by in excess of 50,000 CB Scheme certificates being issued last year, up from 40,000 the year before and under 10,000 ten years ago.
• An overview of Bureau Veritas Electrical and Electronic Product Services:
• Globally, our E&E business has grown to include laboratories across three continents with more than 800 employees dedicated to serving this fast moving and technologically converging market.
• We are an integral part of Bureau Veritas, with in excess of 26,000 employees operating across 140 countries.
• In line with industry and IEC’s goals of sustainability, one of our focus areas is the eco-environment where we continually develop services to help clients comply with the ever growing regulations concerning environmental protection, energy efficiency and hazardous substances (EuP, RoHS, REACH, etc..,)
• Without our involvement in, and the support from, the IEC and the various National Committees, our vision of supporting industry to achieve fast market access would not be possible.
• We continue to actively expand our list of CB Test Labs around the world, helping to contribute to the sustained growth of the CB scheme.
• We also continue to promote actively work under the other schemes such as IECQ scheme for components and hazardous substances, and the IECEX scheme for products used in potentially explosive environments.
• The fact that we represent France, by delegation from UTE, at the various IEC Schemes, we are also committed to continue contributing to the various Standards and Technical Committees at national, regional and international level.

Additionally we hosted a 2-day Technical Committee (TC 10 - Fluids for electrotechnical applications at our Fontenay aux Roses lab near Paris. TC 10 was one of the original Technical Committees, created in 1924 with a mission of preparing product specifications, test methods and maintenance and use guides for liquid and gaseous dielectrics. TC 10 also handles specifications as well as maintenance and use guides for lubricants and control fluids for steam turbines, generators and control systems as well as helps to prepare test methods for such fluids.
